The Odoo 20 API Shift: Is Your Integration Ready for JSON-2?
As Odoo’s documentation states, Odoo deprecated external APIs using XML-RPC and JSON-RPC in versions 19 and beyond, and will remove them from Odoo 20, scheduled for release in fall 2026. The new way forward is to use the External JSON-2 API. If you integrated the system a few years ago using the deprecated endpoint, it should still work.

Check Your Odoo Edition Before Planning Anything
Your hosting and plan limit possibilities. As noted in Odoo’s documentation, access to the API externally is allowed only in Custom plans at Odoo Online; it is not available for One App Free or Standard plans. Odoo.sh and On-Premise have more options but come with hosting and security responsibilities. We identify your Odoo Edition, Version, and Plan so that you do not waste money on an impossible design.

Yes, it can be. Odoo Community edition is open source software, and Odoo offers free plans for implementing a single application (which could include CRM). Paid plans include applications, technical support, and hosting services. However, one issue integrators may face is that Odoo documentation says “external API access” isn’t available with the One App Free and Standard plans of Odoo Online. If you need integration with other systems, make sure that you have the proper plan.
Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, Authorize.Net, and Razorpay can be added as payment providers via the payment providers setting in Odoo. Verify payment provider compatibility by user version and geography, and run sandbox tests before going live. A custom payment gateway requires integration via API.
